He tangata...

Autumn is here, and with it the end of a business year.
Lots has happened in this last year: body& soul turned 5, and moved to a stunning waterfront location. But what was most important: he tangata, he tangata, he tangata - people!

My clients came form all walks of life: Unborn to 91 years old. Women and man. Self-payer and voucher recipients. With loads of massage experience or for their first ever massage. And each one brought his/her unique needs: getting rid of tight shoulders, having some me-time, loosening muscles after a big run, getting rest during a stressful time, maintaining their health, supporting the pregnancy...

Meeting all these different people and finding the best way to meet the individual needs is what I really love about my work.
I hope you could feel that the last time you have seen me for your massage...

maintenance...

Today I have seen a colleague of mine for my own "maintenance" massage. As much as I love giving massages - I really do enjoy getting one, too :-)

For me, massage is not (only!) a treat. It is an important part of my regime to stay healthy and fit. I know I need good health and fitness to be able to do what I love doing: giving a good massage.

Often I come back from my massage not only with less tension, feeling revitalised and de-stressed,
but also with one or the other new idea to implement into my own massage work.
Sometimes it's only a small detail, other times a stroke that felt especially good.

I know that if I want to be one of the best, I will always find something to improve.
And that's what I am stiving for...

Take the stress test...

Ever wondered how high your personal stress level is? Here is a great tool - the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale. This tool developed by psychiatrists in 1967 helps you measure the stress load you carry, and think about what you could do about it. Obviously the death of a spouse is ranking at the top. But even pregnancy, moving house, and a career step adds a lot of stress to our life. Mostly it is not a single event, but the sum of several at one time, that pushes us 'over the edge'.

check your personal stress scale here

Massage is one of the most effective ways to help prevent and manage stress! No wonder, as massage not only reduces muscular tensions, but activates the parasympathetic nervous system ( the 'rest & digest' response) and helps you get back into balance.
So if you score high in the test - maybe it is time to give me a call...

A weekend of further training...

Another beautiful weekend! This one I didn't spend out in the sun, but at yet another training. I took a closer look at one of my "tools": a refresher in Holistic Pulsing.
The power of Holistic Pulsing lies in its softness. The gentle rocking creates ripples through the body, mobilising all the body fluids. Apart from being deeply relaxing, I found it especially effective in restoring freedom and mobility to the joints.

Going back to what I have already learnt is always a good experience: it deepens my understanding and gives me the opportunity to concentrate on the smaller details. With bodywork, a lot of learning actually happens through receiving. On a full weekend of hands-on training I learn not only to apply a technique, but also how it feels like on my own body. I notice the effect it has, sense what feels good - or not so good. And most of all: how it can feel even better! Often it is just a tiny change, that creates that difference in the quality of touch! And that is what I'm striving for...

A whole hour for your feet...

Last week a friend asked me if I do foot massages. And if I would do a full hour of foot massage. The answer was simple: Yes, I do!
I like to work (w)holistically, that's why I usually don't work on one muscle only, but include a whole area or the whole body. But feet are different. Your feet have thousands of nerve endings, which will all be stimulated by a massage. So in a  way I am working the whole body by massaging the feet. That is probably the reason, why almost everyone loves his/her feet massaged ( and I always like to take on the challenge if someone tells me they are too ticklish -my success rate is around 98% !).
Your feet are the ones supporting and carrying you through your life. They bring you ahead, keep you moving. But often they get really badly treated: squeezed into shoes all day long, no air to breath and no room the stretch. And while we tend to put cream on our hands quite regularly, our feet often miss out.
So give your feet a little "thank you" today: A refreshing foot bath, a little squeeze & stretch, and some nice lotion or oil. Than let them breath and walk bare feet. They will love it!
And maybe you want to give them a special treat and book them in for a professional foot massage.
My friend's feet thought it was pure bliss...

a busy weekend: Myofascial release training...

12/12/2011

I just came back from yet another busy weekend: A further training in myofascial release.
Myofascial release is a very gentle and highly effective technique to release the connective tissue that holds the body in dysfunctional postural patterns. Sustained pressure and stretches are used to release restricted fascia around muscles, helping to restore optimal functioning and movement.
The good thing about bodywork trainings is, that I get a lot of treatment myself! So I could not only see some great reactions in my trainings partner's body, but could feel some quite good shifts within my own body, too.  Myofascial release will be another great tool in my toolbox: gentle, powerful and relaxing.  I am really looking forward to using it...

Exam time - the best time for a massage...

Exam time again! Honestly, I am glad I don't have to sit any this year - I still remember vividly how stressful these times were...

Today I had a young lady coming for a massage after she had finished her last exam at high school!
A thoughtful present from her mum - a well-earned reward for a lot of hard work!
But it is more than that: massage helps to loosen all this muscles that tighten up during hard weeks of learning: especially in the back, neck and shoulder area. It soothes the nerves and helps to relax.
And it just feels great!!!

So if you know a young person who just finished her/his exams - or is in the midst of it: why not reward her/him with a massage?! I guarantee you will be loved for it!...

What a weekend: 400 - 500 people queued up for a shoulder rub!...

Wow, what a weekend! Westpac hired me to give free shoulder rubs to their visitors at the home&garden show in Wellington. People loved it so much, that they had to bring in a colleague of mine to help!
Over all we had 400 - 500 people queueing up, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere at the stand, a chat about their financial dreams and a good, professional shoulder rub. For a lot of them it was the first stand they stopped at - what a great way to start the tour through the expo.
It was hard work! But very rewarding, too: getting 'in touch' with so many people, listening to some life stories, meeting people who never had a massage in their life before, and hearing a grateful "thank you sooo much..." while looking at a smiling face a hundred times on a single day!

A big 'Thank you' to Westpac for hiring me and my colleague for the weekend - it was great to work for you. And 'Thank you' to everyone who came to the stand to 'get in touch' with me - you made it a huge success and I enjoyed our time together. Please let Westpac know that you enjoyed it, too - they would love to get your feedback! (And yes, I would love to have some feedback here, too!)

If you have an expo, conference or event coming up and are interested in offering massages: contact me. I am looking forward to do it again...

diversity...

There is one aspect of my work which I really like: diversity! Looking back into my diary and reading all the names of people I met, it's such a great mix: from the mum with little kids who comes to get some knots off her shoulders, but most of all some time out for herself, the sporty person who needs some focused work, the little girl who comes with her mum on her birthday for a special birthday treat, the teacher who books in towards the end of each term (and sometimes in between) , a business person with sore back/neck/shoulders and a very stressful life, the mum to be who enjoys the time to bond with her baby and at the same time getting  rid off some discomforts of her pregnancy, the young woman who got a voucher from her boyfriend, my client who comes every 2. week for "maintenance" (and still there were no two sessions the same)...
The chatty one, the quiet one, the stressed one, the one on holidays, the senior, the child, the full-time-worker and the full-time-at-home, the one who had lots of massages before, the one who never had a massage before...
The list goes on. And as every client is different, so is every massage.
It never gets boring...
