maintenance...

Today I have seen a colleague of mine for my own "maintenance" massage. As much as I love giving massages - I really do enjoy getting one, too :-)

For me, massage is not (only!) a treat. It is an important part of my regime to stay healthy and fit. I know I need good health and fitness to be able to do what I love doing: giving a good massage.

Often I come back from my massage not only with less tension, feeling revitalised and de-stressed,
but also with one or the other new idea to implement into my own massage work.
Sometimes it's only a small detail, other times a stroke that felt especially good.

I know that if I want to be one of the best, I will always find something to improve.
And that's what I am stiving for...

Pregnant in the Hutt...

Just had another pregnant client here. Oh, how I love to work with two people at the same time!!! It's such a privilege to be able to touch the future...

I like to work holistically, and that also means to refer clients. That's why I'm always on the lookout for the good stuff out there, which is sometimes really hard to find! For example an exercise programme specifically for mums-to-be. I spent ages googling, but there was not a lot to find in the Hutt...

As I have my own facebook page running again, I thought I could spend some of my energy in setting up one for all the mums-to-be here in the Hutt! A page created to help them find all the great stuff that is available just for them, here in the Hutt - from childbirth courses to maternity clothes, from photo shoots to exercise programmes... But also to help them find support, should they need it.

So check it out, here is my latest baby:      'Pregnant in the Hutt'

Queen's Birthday. What have you done today?!?
We as family love a good bush walk - especially on a beautiful day.  Today we went for a walk we haven't done before. Or to be more correct: we didn't know exists. A friend of mine told me about it!!!
It is a very nice walk which follows and crosses a stream several times through beautiful bush, and than opens up to a great view over the Hutt Valley!

Honestly, if it wouldn't be for the tips I get from other people, I would have missed so much: a fair, a good movie, the orcas in the harbour, a nice motel on the way. And probably I would not be with my GP, dentist, optometrist, hair dresser,...
And yes, a lot of my clients come to me, because a friend told them about me!
I personally are really thankful for a good tip. And I like sharing the good things I have discovered.
So here the details for the Rata-Street-Loop track in Naenae.

D.I.Y. back massager (not only) for pregnancy and labour...

If I would make a statistic about the area I massage most - the back would be the sure winner!
A good back rub is something, noone can resist. And pregnant women even less...
As much as I love to give professional pregnancy massages, I am also a big supporter of D.I.Y.
I found this little video on youtube -  a very simple, cheap and effective way to give a great back massage, even if you have 2 left hands...
One thing I would like to add, which isn't mentioned in the video: avoid direct pressure ON the spine, only work along both sides of it!

exercise in Eastbourne...

26/7/2011

Is exercise beneficial for your health?!? Well, I guess we all agree it is. I know that I need exercise to keep my body healthy and flexible. But what kind of exercise? Now we could start the discussion!!! But actually that's not my plan. Because everybody is different, and every body needs and prefers different exercise (just as it is with massage!): from a walk along the beach to an iron man.

Eastbourne is a great place for exercise! Plenty of outdoor opportunities, sport clubs and  exercise classes/groups! Do you know just how many exercise classes/groups we have in Eastbourne?!!
To be honest: I don't... ! I do know quite a few - but I am sure I don't know all of them. And there are probably more people out here who don't know the full range on offer! So I thought: why not use this blog to introduce the various exercise opportunities in Eastbourne, and to help you find what suits you best?! Like swissball, yoga, NIA, pilates, nordic walking, Feldenkrais, zumba...

What do you think? Would that be helpful or interesting for you?
I will need your help to find them all though! - so please leave your comment...

breathe right...

Breathe right...  yeah, heard it before! So what?!
Your body is an incredible design! One interesting part of it is your large diaphragm muscle - especially designed to increase the size of your chest cavitiy and therefore drawing the air into your lungs. Physics pure.
But what happens when you don't use this muscle? Well, you still have to breathe! Therefore your chest cavity still has to expand. If your diaphragm doesn't do the job - or not as much as it is designed to - other muscles will have to jump in. These are usually your chest muscles, intercostals, neck and shoulder muscles.
And they can do it. But it's not what they are good at or designed for in the first place! And you know what happens, if someone does a job he/she is constantly overworked  with or not really qualified for...

So if you suffer from regular tight muscles in your upper back/neck/shoulder or chest area - have a look at how you breathe! Changing your breathing pattern will not only help to ease your muscle tensions, but also deepens your breath, massages your inner organs through the movement of the diaphragm and increases the overall state of well-being.

Here are two videos for you: The first one explains the function of the diaphragm, the second one shows you how to practice diaphragmatic breathing. And while you are watching: take a deep breath...

stretch your pecs...

12/7/2011

Last weekend I have been to another training course - I love having these weekends a couple of times a year.
Not only to add more tools to my tool box, but also to catch up with other massage therapists. Most of
us are working on their own or in small practices, so it is a great opportunity to share experiences.

One topic that came up during lunch break was our role as educators. Not the big lectures - but the small tips, which have the potential to bring ease to your life. Someone in the group said: "I would love to change the world simply by teaching to stretch the pecs!" She is so right: the pecs (short for pectoralis or chest muscles) are tight or shortened in a lot of people - often related to work on the computer and the
way we sit at the desk. The shortened muscles draw the shoulders in, and therefore bring tension to
the upper back, neck and shoulder muscles - and they get really unhappy...

A simple pecs stretch can help ease your upper back and neck pain! It doesn't take long at all - and all
you need is a doorway! I looked for a good demo on youtube - and by putting it on my blog, I'm going to
help change the world - one muscle at a time...
